Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Long before the First Order, before the Empire, before even The Phantom Menace 。 。 。 Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in The High Republic

It is a golden age。 Intrepid hyperspace scouts expand the reach of the Republic to the furthest stars, worlds flourish under the benevolent leadership of the Senate, and peace reigns, enforced by the wisdom and strength of the renowned order of Force users known as the Jedi。 With the Jedi at the height of their power, the free citizens of the galaxy are confident in their ability to weather any storm But the even brightest light can cast a shadow, and some storms defy any preparation。

When a shocking catastrophe in hyperspace tears a ship to pieces, the flurry of shrapnel emerging from the disaster threatens an entire system。 No sooner does the call for help go out than the Jedi race to the scene。 The scope of the emergence, however, is enough to push even Jedi to their limit。 As the sky breaks open and destruction rains down upon the peaceful alliance they helped to build, the Jedi must trust in the Force to see them through a day in which a single mistake could cost billions of lives。

Even as the Jedi battle valiantly against calamity, something truly deadly grows beyond the boundary of the Republic。 The hyperspace disaster is far more sinister than the Jedi could ever suspect。 A threat hides in the darkness, far from the light of the age, and harbors a secret that could strike fear into even a Jedi's heart。

I really enjoyed this book。 I think that I wanted a little less POV’s overall, though I understood why each POV was a POV。I didn’t really like the main antagonist, though he is sort of created to be unlikable, but I just found him annoying a lot of the time。

8/13/21 - I tried listening to this on audible but I just could not do it。 There's ambiance background sounds which I assume is supposed to be the sound of the ship's engines。 It's a low rumble and completely distracting。 The story sounds interesting but the unnecessary extra noise really turned me off from doing this one as an audiobook。 I love audiobooks but I do not like when they have atmospheric noise in the background or dramatizations。 We'll do this one as a paper copy instead。 8/13/21 - I tried listening to this on audible but I just could not do it。 There's ambiance background sounds which I assume is supposed to be the sound of the ship's engines。 It's a low rumble and completely distracting。 The story sounds interesting but the unnecessary extra noise really turned me off from doing this one as an audiobook。 I love audiobooks but I do not like when they have atmospheric noise in the background or dramatizations。 We'll do this one as a paper copy instead。 。。。more

It is a solid Star Wars book。 I loved seeing the Jedi at their most influential and learning about events outside of the original time line。 THIS IS NOT A CHILDREN'S BOOK。 It is very violent and deals with some really heavy themes。 (Other than order 66 I've never seen so may Jedi's die)。 That being said, I found it hard to immediately get into it but once I did it was worth it!! Will definitely be reading the rest of the High Republic books!!CW: Death, Kidnapping, Murder, and Violence It is a solid Star Wars book。 I loved seeing the Jedi at their most influential and learning about events outside of the original time line。 THIS IS NOT A CHILDREN'S BOOK。 It is very violent and deals with some really heavy themes。 (Other than order 66 I've never seen so may Jedi's die)。 That being said, I found it hard to immediately get into it but once I did it was worth it!! Probably enjoyable if you're still obsessed with Star Wars I guess。Star Wars used to be my everything when I was a kid。 I still loved it into my early 20's。 I just turned 27, and frankly, I think my time with Star Wars is over。 It's been a few years since I'd say I was "in the fandom" hardcore, but this novel represented a fresh start。 Removing itself from the timeline we're familiar with, and doing something new。 I was excited for that。 Part of the reason I lost interest in Star Wars was how fo Probably enjoyable if you're still obsessed with Star Wars I guess。Star Wars used to be my everything when I was a kid。 I still loved it into my early 20's。 I just turned 27, and frankly, I think my time with Star Wars is over。 It's been a few years since I'd say I was "in the fandom" hardcore, but this novel represented a fresh start。 Removing itself from the timeline we're familiar with, and doing something new。 I was excited for that。 Part of the reason I lost interest in Star Wars was how focused it was on the same ten people and their family drama。 It's a huge universe and I wanted to see more of it。 I was hoping this would be that。 It's really not。So let's begin with characters。 They're flat and dull。 They're just a bunch of generic jedi。 They (and I'm saying they because this was 100% not written by just Charles Soule, but by a committee approving which characters are doing what and where, just look at the videos marketing it。) don't really do much to distinguish them from each other。 They kind of have personalities, but the book bounces around so often that no one really gets focused on, leaving the story with little room to properly invest the reader into the characters。 You can have an ensemble cast, but books like that are rarely as short and padded with filler as this one。 This also immediately jumps into the member berries with Sequel Trilogy tie-ins。 'Member For San Tekka? The guy that died four minutes into Force Awakens? Well here, now his family is the most important family in the history of space travel。 Star Wars can't escape the weird cycle of everything relating to everything。Oh and there are space pirate villains。 They suck though。 One dude is named Marchion。 I remember him cause I couldn't help but laugh at his dumb name the whole time。 They constantly quicker and feel like power ranger villains。 Even their concept art is just goofy looking。 The writing style leaves a lot to be desired too。 From the aforementioned lack of character development, to what I found the most frustrating aspect, the lack of care to anyone reading who doesn't have an encyclopedic knowledge of Star Wars races, ships, planets, and technology。 Large swaths of the book were just a beige pudding in my minds eye because they just list off ship types, alien species, etc without any description of what the hell they are and expect you to just understand or wookiepedia it。 The aliens are especially bad。 Things like "Master Bragabah is a Xyzxtilpic so he naturally could see in the dark。" Oh。 Is he now? That's cool。 What the hell is that exactly? "Master Bragabah piloted his X-232727 using its wings shaped like a Bragabah Tangela to pivot around the wreckage。" Oh。 Did he now? That's cool。 What the hell is that exactly? People who care enough to still be obsessed with Star Wars will likely love all the tie-ins, references, and other junk。 To anyone looking to get away from that side of Star Wars and lose themselves into a new story, where there's developed characters and an interesting conflict。。。 pick up Dune。 。。。more

This book had me hooked, I'm not going to lie I didn't want to put it down。 The characters they introduced were likeable and you start to really feel for them。 So when certain things happen in the story you do feel sad, elated, excited or proud。 The villains felt a bit like the gangs from mad max and you can imagine them being crazy and suicidal! Not a fan。 It was cold and not a joy。 Listened to the audiobook and ended up putting it on 1。5x to get through it, hoping it would get better。 It didn’t。 It’s the second book I’ve listened to in this High Republic series, and I’m not inclined to listen to more。 Joyless。 I fast forwarded some scenes with the big bad, because they were so boring/annoying。

Very enjoyable! However, the amount of characters and perspective switch every chapter sometimes made it hard to connect with。 It was interesting to see it unravel and I can’t wait to see how this story develops。

A very good introduction to a new era of Star Wars! So many fresh and interesting characters。 The main plot starts a little slow but quickly grips you。 I can’t wait to read the rest of the high republic books。

The second half of the book doesn't live up to the strong first act。 The book does what it needs to in terms of setting up a new era within Star Wars, but does so with so many characters it's easy to lose track of who's who and starts to feel more like the pilot for a TV show where they're already planning 5 spinoff series。 I don't mind setup for more books - Star Wars films come in trilogies, after all - but it just felt like too much stuffed into one novel。 That said, I appreciate overall what The second half of the book doesn't live up to the strong first act。 The book does what it needs to in terms of setting up a new era within Star Wars, but does so with so many characters it's easy to lose track of who's who and starts to feel more like the pilot for a TV show where they're already planning 5 spinoff series。 I don't mind setup for more books - Star Wars films come in trilogies, after all - but it just felt like too much stuffed into one novel。 That said, I appreciate overall what the book is doing。 Some of it was pretty subtle, like what felt like a recalibration of the Jedi from how they've been misrepresented in books in the past (I'm looking at you, Kevin J。 Anderson)。 The era itself feels like a course correction from the lore nightmare that is the thankfully non-canonical Old Republic era, which can only be a good thing, and I'm excited to see what happens with it。 I just wish Soule had been given more reign over his story, because it started off so promising - only to get mired in what felt like the "work" or setting things up for others。 。。。more

A book that took some time to sink its claws into me, The Light of the Jedi is, at least, an interesting point in time in the Star Wars universe。 Taking place some 200 years before the events of the Phantom Menace, you get a view into the beginning of the end of the last great republic。 One of the positives of reading any Star Wars book is familiarity with some of the characters, but, other than a brief mention of Yoda, we have an all new cast。 And, there’s a decent amount of them too, so I felt A book that took some time to sink its claws into me, The Light of the Jedi is, at least, an interesting point in time in the Star Wars universe。 Taking place some 200 years before the events of the Phantom Menace, you get a view into the beginning of the end of the last great republic。 One of the positives of reading any Star Wars book is familiarity with some of the characters, but, other than a brief mention of Yoda, we have an all new cast。 And, there’s a decent amount of them too, so I felt I needed time to flesh out those images and having to look up the specific races I wasn’t familiar with by name。 Once I saw what it was, I recognized it and was able to picture it fine moving forward。 As I mentioned, it took awhile to get invested in the events and story。 I went from wanting to just finish it to move on to something else to getting invested in the characters and events happening。 The author is great at pulling the rug away just at the right moment to keep you wanting to read。 By the end, I went from writing the series off to immediately putting a hold at my library for the next in the series。 If you’re a fan of Star Wars and would like something a little different than what you are use to, I would give this one a look。 。。。more

Fairly interesting but writing isn’t that great。 This should be considered a staging ground for the rest of the High Republic era, and serves to introduce characters more than to develop them。

This is the first in the Star Wars High Republic series, which is supposed to be set a few hundred years before the prequels。 It has to do a lot of heavy lifting to set up the story, and jumping back and forth between multiple characters probably doesn't help。 It also doesn't help that the first hundred pages or so deal with a major cataclysm that introduces our major characters while jumping back and forth at a break-neck pace, then the story abruptly shifts gears and never returns to that urge This is the first in the Star Wars High Republic series, which is supposed to be set a few hundred years before the prequels。 It has to do a lot of heavy lifting to set up the story, and jumping back and forth between multiple characters probably doesn't help。 It also doesn't help that the first hundred pages or so deal with a major cataclysm that introduces our major characters while jumping back and forth at a break-neck pace, then the story abruptly shifts gears and never returns to that urgent pacing。 The story is also setting up multiple other High Republic stories, some of which are barely connected, but some will clearly be a continuation of the conflict。 All of that makes this harder to do well and it doesn't feel like a shining success。 I enjoyed the backstory on Jedi and simply being in the Star Wars world again, even if it's not quite familiar。 The set up for other High Republic stories is also helpful, as I've enjoyed some of those more。 。。。more
